How I Learned To Actually Enjoy Working Out After Years Of Dreading The Gym

For most of my adult life, working out felt like something I had to survive rather than something I looked forward to. I would set an alarm, drag myself through a workout I did not particularly enjoy, and count down the minutes until I could leave. I kept at it because I knew it was good for me, not because any part of it actually felt good in the moment.

That changed once I stopped trying to force myself through solo workouts and started training in an environment built around other people. It sounds like a small shift, but it changed almost everything about how sustainable my routine felt.

The first thing I noticed was how different group training feels compared to grinding through sets alone with headphones in. There is a kind of energy that comes from a room full of people working just as hard as you are, pushing through the same set at the same time. I stopped watching the clock and started actually paying attention to the workout itself.

I found this shift at Fitness Extreme Mumbai, a gym in Andheri West that put real emphasis on its GroupX classes rather than treating them as an afterthought to the weight room. The variety helped too. Some days leaned into strength, other days were built more around conditioning, and the instructors changed things up often enough that I never felt like I was repeating the same routine on a loop. Alongside the classes there is a full gym floor for days I want to train alone, personal training if I want a session built specifically around a goal, and cardio equipment for the days I just want to move without thinking too hard about it.

What surprised me most is how much showing up became about the people rather than the workout itself. I started recognizing faces in the same evening slot, then started actually talking to them before and after class. That small sense of community did more for my consistency than any app, tracker, or motivational quote ever managed to. I was not just committing to a workout program anymore, I was committing to showing up for people who expected to see me there.

None of this means intensity stopped mattering. I still push hard during class and still track progress on the basics like strength and endurance. What changed is that I no longer treat every session like a test I have to pass entirely alone. On the days training feels harder than usual, having a room full of people around you changes how that difficulty actually feels. It stops feeling like something you have to grind through in isolation and starts feeling like something you are working through together.

The other piece that mattered more than I expected was recovery. Mumbai already asks a lot from anyone trying to stay consistent, long commutes, unpredictable hours, and broken sleep more nights than not. Training hard on top of that without paying attention to recovery is a fast way to burn out completely. Having steam, sauna, and other recovery options built into the same gym meant I did not have to go out of my way to take care of that side of things separately. It simply became part of the routine instead of one more task to schedule around everything else.

Looking back, the biggest thing I got wrong for years was assuming that discipline alone was supposed to carry me through workouts I did not actually enjoy. Discipline gets you through a few weeks. Enjoying the process, and having people around who make showing up feel worthwhile, is what actually gets you through years.

If you have been forcing yourself through workouts you dread purely on willpower, it might be worth looking at the environment rather than the plan. Sometimes the missing piece is not a better program. It is training somewhere that makes you want to show up in the first place, and everything else tends to follow from there.

A few months into this shift, I noticed something else changing too, how I talked about training with friends and coworkers. It stopped being framed as a chore I was pushing through and started being something I actually brought up on my own, the class I tried that week, the small progress I noticed, the people I had started to know by name. That kind of talk tends to be a decent sign that the habit has actually stuck rather than being held together by willpower alone.

I also stopped treating rest days as guilt inducing. For years, taking a day off felt like falling behind, so I would either skip it or spend it feeling vaguely anxious about losing progress. Once training stopped feeling like a battle I had to win every single day, rest days started feeling like part of the plan rather than a failure to stick to it. That shift alone probably did more for how long I have stuck with training than any single workout ever could.

None of this happened overnight, and I do not think it would have happened in a gym that treated classes, personal training, and recovery as separate, unrelated boxes to tick. Having all of it under one roof made it easier to actually build a routine around, rather than trying to piece together a plan across three or four different places and hoping it held together.
